Effective strategies against global warming mostly come down to choosing different technologies than those currently dominating the market.
In the long term, making the shift to those technologies promises overall economic growth as well as the environmental benefits. The repeated claim that this "will be bad for business" is not correct in that sense.
However--while the overall effect on the economy--on business--will be positive, it will very definately be bad for some existing businesses--mostly the fossil fuel industry. And they are using their money and influence to block change in every way they can. Getting constructive policies in place has to overcome this bloc of special interests. That's the biggest hurdle.

the truth is hidden
ecologists and scientists who work for politicians ,get paid by these politicians and they have downplayed the facts because solutions are expensive and means change and change effects many peoples incomes, and upsets profit margins,so most of the world is kept in the dark of the real things that are going on.
and the ostrich mentality of the millions of people who cannot come to terms with a big change or the fact that people have had an affect on climate change ,religion is partly responsible because their projections are different from what is going on.
but in any case here are some ideas
and avenues to help--------
global warming i dont think can be stopped but we can stop helping it becoming faster, this requires global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,
At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.

POSITIVE ACTIONS
if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to slowdown the destructive processes
reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.
the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.
the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia
Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.
the protection of existing forrests.
stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.
education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.
education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´populaion
Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.
more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks
,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour
alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine
recicling wastes,limit water use
here are a 100 more ways

The biggest hurdle is finding an economically viable alternative to fossil fuels as our main source of energy. All present alternatives involve additional costs that most people are not willing to pay. Once an alternative is found that costs the same or less than fossil fuels then it will be quickly adopted.

People's comfort levels and attitudes - "nahhh...it's not happening!"
To affect REAL change, we have to undergo a pretty significant shift in our dominant paradigm. Everything is NOT okay and once the majority of citizens wake up to the fact, we will see some significant changes.
At the moment, I feel that the biggest hurdles (apart from our attitudes) in seeking a solution to the problem is the fact that the multinationals who derive vast profits from contributing to the problem are unwilling to change and potentially stuff their companies, their personal paychecks and shareholder's profits. Down the track from the multinationals are the politicans who are elected by way of the same companies providing the funds required for an election campaign....then there's the media, of course - who are fully in bed with both the politcians and the multinationals. How else to explain the alarming statistics about reporting of climate change outlined in "An Inconvenient Truth"?
It's not all doom and gloom however. WE have the power to change things - we simply have to adopt the correct attitude and mindset. We must educate ourselves and see through the lies being peddled by the energy and vehicle corporations...

By far it is peoples unwillingness to accept scientific fact, and politicians being more worried about their 4 year term instead of looking at the long term.
