I've been holding back on using it on this forum, but bypassed some things I should have answered with excerpts from this book from a Christian Bishop. Now, that I've freshened my memory of the book, I am having second thoughts. It will sit next to and at hand with "The New Testament from 26 Translations."

Bishop Spong is witty, and willing to question himself and others. Refreshing to read a leader who disavows lockstep.

I met Spong - he's a very charming and charismatic man - though he is not the smartest or most original proponent of the views he puts forth. If you are interested in his position, I suggest John Robinson's book "Honest to God" (the grand-daddy of controversial Christian popular theology), Lloyd Geering's more robust "God in the New World", and of course, the theology of Paul Tillich.

Atheist here...and I liked the book. It is high time that someone from the moderate political spectrum of the Christian faith took on the literalists and Religious Right.

I have been getting e-mail from Bishop Spong and he knows not whereof he speaks. I read the e-mail from him until I figured out what he was; now I just delete it. I don't trust him any more than I trust Benny Hinn.

The book is wonderful. Please use it. I have given away more copies than I can remember and I am a career Christian musician, but look forward to better days.
