If she was registered with the microchip company, her information will be retrieved if it is requested. To my knowledge, there's no other way to 'activate' a microchip. (Unless you're from across the pond, and you brits do it different over there.)

Are you saying that you never filed the paperwork with CAR?
The vet who inserts the chip always scans to see that it is reading, but if you had her chipped at your vet and never sent in the paperwork, there will be no way to trace her back to you. However, if she came from a shelter where they chip the dogs at time of adoption, it is possible they filed it for you.
If you never registered it and it was a home-again microchip (little yellow rubber tag) I suggest you go to the AKC/CAR website; there should be a phone # there that you can call and get her enrolled ASAP. Do you still have any paperwork that has the microchip # on it? If not can you contact whoever put the chip in, first thing in the morning? I would also call the local shelters and give them a description of the dog and explain the problem.

You don't activate the microchip. The only way your dog will be found with the microchip is if someone takes her to the dog pound or if the dog is taken in by someone and they take it to the vet. And then if the people take her to the vet are truthful about finding her. The vet will than feel for the chip. Once they find the chip they will scan it and if you have the chip registered then you will get your dog back. Sorry to say those chips are not really any good. I wish you luck with finding your little dog.

Call the database that her chip is registered with and be sure your contact and emergency contact information has been entered. Chips are not automatically registered when they are inserted. You usually have to fill out a form (or online) and pay a small fee to register the chip. Many dogs have microchips that aren't registered. Contact the place that placed the chip if you don't know what kind your pet has. The database will need her microchip number if she isn't registered. Call all the local shelters - not all shelters automatically scan for chips. Tell them she has one. Also call all local vets and hang up posters in your neighborhood with a picture.

The micro-chip is always activated. It simply requires a reader to determine the assigned number the dog has. When a vet, dog catcher, kennel owner, individual, etc. scans the dogs right shoulder the number will appear. There is a central bank of numbers reached by calling a 800 number that appears with the ID number.

Dr. Chris was right...
If you don't have the microchip number, the vet hospital who inserted it should have it on record. Also, most vet hospitals, if they don't register it with the company for you (most don't), will have the chip registered to them, then in turn will cross reference with their database.
Also, don't panic yet, as it is the weekend and most vets and shelters are closed until monday, so if your dog shows up somewhere, chances are that he won't even get scanned until tomorrow.
Call the microchip company asap (they are available 24/7)...Good Luck

I am so sorry that your dog is lost. But you do not activate them. What they do is that if they are found law enforcement or animal control has a scanner that they run across the animal and it will show up your info or your vets info depending on who is was set up to call. Also if she has one of those tags that says she is chipped it has a number that anyone can call and give the serial number on the tag to and they will contact you or your vet to tell you where your dog is at. I hope you find your dog good luck. I lost my baxer one day and was looking for her until 4 am and we finally found her she was locked inside a neighbors fence in their backyard.

if your dog is picked up by the ranger or the pound or found by someone and taken to a vet etc, they will scan your dog and the scanner will pick up the chip on teh computer and give the details of the dog and you of the owner so they will contact you
other than that i suggest you put out some flyers and an advertisement under the lost and found in your local paper
u actually thought the chip was like something like a tracker device?

Microchips are active when they are implanted. Call the 800 number you re supposed to call if your dog is lost and give them the microchip number and how to contact you.

If I am correct in understanding how chips work, they don't operate like a GPS locator chip. The chip only works if someone finds your dog and takes the dog to a vet where they scan it for a chip. If your dog has a chip, then the information will pop up at the vet's office. You can't activate the chip to locate your dog. Someone has to find him first.
I suggest putting up fliers with your dog's picture, description, and your contact information. Also notify all vet's offices and humane societies within a 10-15 mile radius in case someone brings a dog in with your description.
Good luck!!
