pretty much the same function. however a static dc voltage sometimes builds up corrosion on the wiper connection if it is not moved occassionally. wire-wound rheostats are ok at 60 hz but not suitable for higher frequency applications because they become inductive.

Because it is just a variable resistor, it has the same effect on DC or AC.
