Well, I got my road test done, and I have my license after 6 months of being 17. Well, now that I have it I was informed I would not be helped with insurance. I have a twin as well, but basically I’m asking what the benefits of being put on my grandparents insurance that don’t have any violations or anything opposed to starting my own policy.

Well first off, it is waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy cheaper to get added on to your grandparents policy, also the car you drive has to be registered in their name. If you get a policy on your own, you're looking at, at least $400 a month for a no fault policy, because you're so young and because you have virtually no experience as a licensed driver. Stick with getting on a plan with your grandparents. Some insurances even offer good grade discounts, so check into it!

Congratulations on getting your license!

Because at 17 you are a high statistical risk for having an accident the auto insurance companies regard you as a pariah. If they do deign to give you insurance they will fleece you for it.

However, there are some workarounds that might help, depending on your situation. This website has some advice relevant to teen drivers which may help.

Good luck!

Having your own policy causes you to have a higher premium. I know this because my son just recently got his license and he wanted his own policy (I make him pay for his insurance), but when he was told it would cost him an extra $250.00 per year he decided that being on my policy was the better idea because together we get a group rate vs. a single rate!

Hope this helps!

Being on your grandparents insurance will be a lot cheaper than being on your own. But this is because your grandparents are responible people who are betting their insurance reputation on you. (If you mess up and crash, their insurance goes up.) The insurance company figures that is they are willing to take such a risk on you, then maybe the insurance company will to.
