My cousin fell skating down a hill and is in the hospital. he bled from his head, and has blood in his brain. doctors have performed a CAT scan, and surgery might be needed. He feels very sleepy and says he doesn't want to die. how serious is this? and can there be any consequences from all this? can brain surgery result in brain disfunctions? what can blood in the brain do?

If your friend is coherent and talking, the outlook for a complete and rapid recovery is very good. Bleeding in the brain cavity can cause damage if the bleeding is severe and untreated. Build-up of blood in the brain cavity causes pressure to develop, which damages the brain. Since the doctors are monitoring your friend, there doesn't appear to be an immediate risk. Often, the surgery to stop bleeding is nothing more than drilling tiny holes in the skull to relieve the pressure. The main risk from this type of surgery is infection.

Sometimes, actual surgery to the brain is needed to seal off blood vessels if they continue to bleed. The outcome of this type of surgery depends on the location of the problem, and anything can happen. Most likely, your friend is not in this situation, or the surgery would probably be done already.

I'm sorry to hear about your cousin's accident. Yes, bleeding in the brain is very serious and can cause brain damage or even death. It is good that they have already diagnosed the problem so that he can get the proper treatment. Brain surgery does have risks, including brain damage, but it is important to compare those risks to the risks of not operating, which can also lead to brain damage. The doctors who are taking care of your cousin would know more about his particular case than any of us here, so talk to them if possible. I hope your cousin recovers quickly.
