You can't answer that question. Assuming you are talking about red wines, both have good and not so good wines. Buy any of the two for $2,99 at a liquor store and you could end up with a headache.
And even when comparing both wines with bottles of similar quality, it is a personal choice which one you prefer. Both wines also match with different dishes.
But if you ever come to my house and want to bring a bottle: I prefer Zinfandel :O)

Really simple explanation ;
If you really don't like red wine, drink Merlot

i love merlot... a good one can be complex with a bit of spice and deep and smooth. zinfandel with lots of depth and spice is also delicious, but i find merlot easier to drink if i don't want to 'think' about what i'm drinking.

I find zinfandel much more complex and interesting, esp. red zin compared to merlot.

Merlot is a more robust, sophisticated wine that one learns to appreciate over time.
For myself, Merlot is almost a state of mind where I feel more calm and relaxed with every sip. It also makes me more inclined to savior the moment; so it's ideal for special occasions.
