I filed last year, but I didn't have to. This year, I only made about $1000. I just don't have the time to figure it all out, and I hate paying to have them done, because I don't even get enough back to pay to have them done. I only got about $25 last year. I'm a college student, so its a very very part time job situation. Any help will be appreciated!

I don't think I had any withheld. I work at my church and we make so little each pay period that they don't withhold anything but like Social Security and Medicaid. Does that matter? Thanks for all the help thus far!

If you only made $1,000 last tax year and only $25 this year then you have made enough money to fall below the threshold where you don't have to pay taxes.

However, if you don't file your taxes this year and if you have paid for telephone service then you won't get the refund of the recently repealed tax that was originally meant to help pay for the Spanish American War. Since the IRS can only go back three tax years the refund will only be for the latest three years.

If you didn't pay a phone bill then you don't have to worry about it. That reminds me I made so little money that I fall below the poverty line and I haven't had to file income taxes in a few years. I have to do it this year if I want to get that phone rebate though.

If you earned less than $8,450 ($5,150 if claimed as a dependent) there's no need to file. You can do a free e-file through the IRS website. Many states have similar programs through the state's tax department website. Or you can download the forms and instructions from the websites. It's not all that hard especially if you're just claiming a refund of taxes withheld. It's something that you will need to know how to do for the rest of your life. Now is as good a time as any to get on the ball.

If your $1000 was on a W-2, then no, you don't have to file. If it was on a 1099-misc as non-employee compensation, then you have to file.

If it was W-2 and you had federal income tax withheld, print off a 1040EZ from irs.gov - shouldn't take more than half an hour, if that long, to fill it out - you can mail it in, and you'd get your withholding refunded.
