As you can see from the answers so far, cats can make that loud meow sound for several reasons. One which has not been mentioned yet is what happens with my male, Paco. He will sound out with that long, low meeeeeoooowww sound just before he begins wretching up his dinner! So when I hear it, I leap to my feet and grab anything to catch the throw-up (if I can get there in time) or clean it up (if I can't!).
I hope your cat meows for one of the "nicer" reasons!

He's probably trying to tell you something! One of mine does that all the time. Sometimes in the middle of the night she will sit next to me in the bed, lean over and SCREAM in my ear. When I finally wake and ask her what she wants, she just flings herself down next to me and purrs! I think she just wants me to know that she is now ready for bed. She has a plate of dry food on a shelf in my bedroom, and wakes me with a load meow every time she feels like a nibble. I have to get up and play with the food, and then she will happily eat it. ( At night she REFUSES to eat anywhere other than in my bedroom. I have 12 other cats, and they are all reasonably well behaved compared to her, so I guess it is just a personality thing. She does believe she is the queen of the house, and even makes the dog's (a Boxer and a Jack Russell) life a living hell when she feels like it. Maybe deep down your's is also just avery demanding kitty, and you haven't got the message yet!

My cat does that occasionally, and yesterday I figured out why: he's annoyed. Yes, his litter box was too dirty for him, so he meowed loudly a couple times, and peed on the rug instead. Sometimes I think it's because he wants to go outside, doesn't like his food options, is bored, or anything else. He's an attention whore, too.

If your cat's an unneutered male, then he'll meow because he's looking for a female cat, and another possibility that I could think of is that your cat might be one of those breeds of cats that tends to meow very loudly.
Another possibility is that your cat might be thirsty, because some cats will meow if they're thirsty but don't deem the water in their bowls clean enough for them to drink.

Every cat I've ever had did this. Last night at like 3am my cat Hobbes was on the windowsill and went "MEEEOWWW!" I woke up and asked her what's wrong. She started purring and layed down by me; just wanted some attention at 3am. I've had cats that will go upstairs by themselves and meow until somebody comes up to fuss over them.

Is the cat fixed? If not, that is probably why it is meowing like that. My cats do this everytime a female cat come in heat.
