It means to stop something that is actively in progress.
In the case of the space mission:
The rocket was fueled and ready to go but a last minute fuel leak forced us to abort the mission.
We were hoping to have several space missions next year but a lack of funding forced us to cancel our plans.

Abort means to shut it off something, that is usually a mission or a system.

And yes, it has connections with science.

There are two common meanings to this word.

One meaning is "cancel", although it is mostly used with computers. To run a program is to "execute" the program. To stop a program before it is done is to "abort" a program. In normal use, you may see a program ask "The program is not responding. Would you like to abort the program?"

The other meaning is to terminate a pregnancy before a woman gives birth. This uses the form "Abortion", when a woman decides to intentionally end her pregnancy early instead of giving birth. To hear it in normal use, you may hear "She could not raise her child, so she went to the hospital to have an abortion."

These are the most common meanings in everyday English.

Abort the project if anything appears wrong. (Stop the project if anything appears wrong). Abort and Stop can be used interchangeable in many instances. The word, "Abort" has a connotation of immediate cessation.
