I've worked a few customer service jobs, specifically in both retail (big box), retail (small privately-owned) and as a server/waiter (chain restaurant).
No matter what you do, people are going to be *****, because the majority of the people seem to have no clue what it's really like to work there.
My advice is continue to be friendly, but if someone's being rude to you, simply do the bare-bones requirement of the job and move on to the next person. Too many people will be rude even if you do the absolute best and give them everything they want. So, just do your best to avoid getting discouraged by trying to remember the good customers, and being first to get to serve them.
Also, if you ask someone if they need help and they give attitude or ignore you, then just leave and don't come back. If they try to get you in trouble, then you can explain to your manager that you did, in fact, try to help, but were rebuked, so it's not your fault. If the manager doesn't believe you, then maybe you need to find a different store to work at

Having worked retail in highschool I can say that working with the general populous can really suck if you let it get to you. You can't please everybody all the time and there is always some moron who has unrealistic expectations of clerks, or has no basic respect for, or ability to interact properly with, other people, or whatever. That said, when I go into some place where the staff is on commission, I do my best to avoid all of them. If I need help I'll ask. I don't need some guy trying to sell me stuff when I'm shopping. I generally just say 'no' if they ask if I need help, but if they persist I have no qualms about ignoring them. If they feel thats rude, then they can pick a new line of work for all I care.

It only takes a few bad apples to ruin what's in the barrel. Or, it seems like "everyone" is rude, when actually it's only a few.
Keep on with your customer service, and ignore those bad apples. The truth is, you're attracting more customers to your shop by being friendly. This is good business.

I don't know. Not all customers are like that but many of them can be rude. They complain about the prices and say that they can get it cheaper someplace else. They're a strange lot that's for sure. I've been dealing with them for almost 22 years now and it hasn't gotten any better. I try not to become one of them when I am the customer.

Please keep doing what you are doing! I do the shopping for my entire family and I can attest to the fact that I'm often left without help. I would love to have someone offer assistance rather than have to beg for it.
Perfect example, clothes shopping for my kids. I had clothes in my arms, was ready to pay and be on my way. As I approached the cashier, 4 employees were there talking amongst themselves. Before I put my merchandise on the counter ALL 4 of them walked off. Not one person was left to ring me up! I put the clothes on the counter and left the store empty handed.
Please don't let rude inconsiderate jerks get you down or affect the way you treat your customers. There are loads of us that want to be spoken to and would love to have someone help us!! And we have the money to spend, too.

As previous kit fails, which contain your lighting fixtures ballasts, replace them with severe performance digital ballasts, and go with the smaller wattage tubes which are available. It sounds like you're quite reasonable in your approach, and I think most customers would appreciate your friendly attitude. Unfortunately, there are enough rude people in the wold that makes your job hard and there is little you can do that would please them, but the 95% of the rest of us are grateful people like you are there to help.

Been there, got out. I finally burned out.
My favorite were the people that would go on about not getting any help to me while I was helping them.
People forget this is another person, and feel free to vent any pent-up bitternesses on them. It will continue, and you will either have to separate yourself from their reaction to you, or get out like I did.

I worked for years with the general public; it is not easy and employees are typically under paid.
You're not going to please all of the people all of the time. Remember this when you become frustrated.
