Chumley's on Bedford Street - an old speakeasy with no sign outside - you have to go through the courtyard of an apartment house to get to the bar. They still have the original booths and fireplace - they serve food after 5 - the burgers are good.
More upscale, but, a really beautiful bar is Pegu Club on Houston Street and LaGuardia Place.
My favorite bar of all time was on Seventh Avenue South near Bleecker - there's a Sushi Samba there now, but, years ago there was a great bar called the Buffalo Roadhouse - filled with good-looking young bearded men - I lived two blocks away and I was a "regular" there.

There are so many, but if you want good Jazz to go with your drinks try the Blue Note, it's probably the best jazz club in the city.
