My parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles are all Christians, but my brother and I have turned out to be atheists. Our mother is the only one who knows so far, because she's the most tolerant. But she feels that she has somehow failed us as a mother. What could we say to her to make her feel better?

Show her that you're still a loving, altruistic, compassionate, ethical gal... and that's about all you can do... only SHE can change her own mind.

Actions speak louder than words in these cases. Prove that she has not failed by leading a wonderful life. Be successful, happy, caring, etc. Eventually she will at least realize that you are a great person, and that she has done a good job, even if you don’t share her delusions.

change to being an agnostic or a deist./isn't an atheist making the same mistake a christian is making. thinking believing is knowing/ just say OK theres probably something behind it all and i quess it could be called God but you're clueless to what it means or how it works because its unknown and unknowable

Same thing in my family, my older brother and I are the only Atheists (so far).

My mom believes once saved, always saved.
She believes that ppl who get saved & lose their faith just go to outer darkness for a 1000 years, before they are allowed in heaven. (kinda like Catholics have purgatory).

That's a tough one.

And one of the few honest questions in the R & S section.

I don't know, as I ceased having contact with many relatives over this.

Be good to her - treat her as a mother who tried her best should be treated. Don't forget her birthday, and visit her regularly. Make her the envy of the other mothers.

It's not up to you to make her feel better. Just continue to show that you are the same relatively good person that she raised you to be and leave it at that.

lie and say your Christians. a convenient lie can't hurt. being atheist only means that logically you are aware of your environment. you look at things from a empirical perspective. so lie it's not like your going to go to hell right!

I am sorry that she is hurting because of this. Have you explained to her your reasons?

Unfortunately, most of the fundies I see are incapable of logical thought, but have you explained using logic?

Reassure her that it was a decision that you made on your own. It is not a reflection on her.

Good luck sweetie. I hope you can reassure your Mom, because she must love you a lot.
