Me and my girlfriend just got engaged. We're still in college and planning on getting married as soon as we graduated (in a little over a year). Is it ok to throw an engagement party even though we're kind of young or should we just stick with a bridal shower for her closer to the actual wedding?

An engagement sounds like a great reason to throw a party. I wouldn't expect any gifts since in most of the world that isn't the tradition, but you can still have a party.

Traditionally bridal showers are when gifts are given so I would tell your guests that gifts are not required. Then if someone gives you a gift or if a group of your friends decides to do that then you are a lucky pair of women. But, I would go into it NOT expecting any gifts, and only looking for a good party and a time to celebrate.

Congratulations on your engagement.

The engagement party is traditionally hosted (organized, planned and paid for) by the young lady's parents. The engaged couple should NOT host their own engagement party, they are the honored guests, unless there are no other alternatives. An engagement party is not a gift giving event. The couple should not be registered with any bridal or wedding registry until the engagement party has taken place. If you are offended by this couple hosting their own engagement party then that is your reason for not attending. You should not support or participate in any event that you are uncomfortable with. Congratulations on your engagement. Yes, throw an engagement party as soon as you like. Your age doesn't matter (apart from the issue of age and alcohol ). Wedding planning and weddings can end up being stressful so a more relaxed party now would be good.

How this..."be engaged to be engaged". Then she can wear the ring on a chain around her neck. Then after graduation put it on her finger again and announce your engagement at an engagement party. Cool huh!

A couple does not typically throw the engagement party, the bride's family does. It is their opportunity to announce the engagement, and so that each family can meet the prospective spouse, and their family members.

An engagement is definitely a reason to celebrate! Throw a party but I agree, don't expect gifts. Have fun and congrats.

Engagement parties are thrown within 2-3 months of the engagament. So you don't need to have one like tomorrow. But sure, why not, go ahead. It's just another to party!

Not everyone has an engagement party - you don't get gifts there, it's just a chance for everyone to get together for drinks and munchies.
