Was there ever a time when people wouldn't confess? In all the movies I see of World War II, people suffer terrible torture and just die.

Is this just based on a few heroic incidents, or perhaps Hollywood fantasy, or was there a time of extreme bravery?

And the books, did they exaggerate? Or have troops always been ordinary people?

Para-diddle, I can see you're suffering from sleep deprivation, but we still can't get you to click on the spell check. Great answer though.

torture has always had the same effect on people.

and in many of the movies that i have seen, torture has not worked, but has only been successful at getting people to say whatever it was that they thought would stop the torture.

for as long as things have been recorded there have been people who thought torture worked and people on the receiving end who would either stand up to it or cave and say whatever.

the salem witch trials are a superb example - over 200 were accused of witchcraft and about 180 of them 'confessed' to all sorts of dribble that got the torture to stop and save them from the hangman's noose.

yes, we got valuable confessions about people riding brooms around the countryside, communing with the devil and all manner of utter RUBBISH!

torture never worked then and it won't work now!

Western people have been softened by being safe and spoiled, and made to follow to many laws, so they are not near as apt to violence as most think americans are. There would be many more criminals, and much worse wars if they were cruel by nature,,,
they have conscience now....so, they expect conscience,,but make NO MISTAKE>>> our enemies are NOT with consciences , cant you tell ?!
Ya better harden your *sses !

Nope, name rank and serial number. That was all they gave. That was the way it was in Viet Nam too. No information was given for anything.
