Cold_steeve and rehab_doc got it right. It stands for "gran tourismo". It comes from the early days of muscle cars. Famous races were held every year in Europe and G.T. was from an Italian phrase that meant the car could go the distance. There were diffent races for different types of cars and engines. GTO was for engines Over 2 liters. GTU was engines under 2 liters. The famous Pontiac GTO (also called the "Goat") got its name this way. Later abbreviations were just common American labels such as LX, LS, LE, and LTD, which are about the style of a sedan. Newer labels such as HO and EFI denote special attributes of the engine (High Output and Electronic Fuel Injection). You mentioned Mustang, so the GT means it's a high performance car. Some Mustangs also have "SVT" which stands for Special Vehicle Team. The SVT is a separate group of mechanics at Ford that builds and tests special high performance vehicles. The Mustang SVT is usually better and faster than the regular GT.
