I recently downloaded and installed AVG Free Edition. Everything was fine until i wanted to uninstall it to install the recently purchased McAfee Internet Security. When i went to uninstall my product by using the AVG Uninstall Wizard it said it had removed. So i restarted the pc and went to install McAfee. McAfee said that AVG was not removed. So i tried using Add/Remove Programs and when i went to uninstall from that it gave me the error message:

Installer initialization failed due to following error:
Error: Initialization of the language file "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7" failed.
General failure.

So i restarted my pc again and downloaded and run the repair program for it and it still gives me the same message. I have tried system restore and that does not help. What is more annoying is that AVG DO NOT offer technical help for this software and i AM NOT formatting my hard drive.

SENSIBLE ANSWERS PLEASE!

Cheers,
technical_sound

Unfortunately, even after uninstalling a program, some useless registry keys are left behind - just enough registry keys to prevent you from installing McAfee. You need to use an uninstaller program. The program scans your computer for files and registry keys that belongs to a specific software program. You can then have the uninstaller program remove them all. There are several free and commercial programs. I tend to use the commercial programs since they are more effective. I highly recommend Your Uninstaller and Zsoft Uninstaller. Your Uninstaller comes with a free 30 day trial; after 3 weeks, you have to purchase a license to continue using it. Zsoft Uninstaller is completely free, no time limitation.

1. Your Uninstaller (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Your_Uninstaller_2006/1031658821/1)

2. Zsoft Uninstaller (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/ZSoft_Uninstaller/1107791770/1)

-----------
Before making any changes, create a system restore point. Go to Start Menu > Help and Support > Undo Changes to My Computer > Create System Restore Point. Download and install Your Uninstaller. Load the program and select Pro mode. On the menu bar, select Module > Uninstaller. Scroll down the screen until you see the program you want to uninstall. Right click on the selected program icon and choose Uninstall. If you can't find the program's icon, on the menu bar Action > Advanced Uninstall > type in the name of the program (i.e. AVG Antivirus). Your Uninstaller will scan your computer's program files and Windows registry. Once the process is complete, select Uninstall All.

I hate these crazy programs that won't uninstall..... the same thing happened to a friend's PC with Panda AV. I'll tell you what I did, and worked.

Of course you don't have to format anything!! Never try that. Don't really have to.

So... the last resort, if everything else failed is this: --BE VERY CAREFUL, and BACK UP EVERYTHING, especially the REGISTRY. And create a system restore point.

OK here we go: manually delete all avg folders still lurking around.

Then and this is the tricky part (be VERY careful) run regedit.exe and search for all keys containing the AVG chain and anything related to the program (again be careful!!) and delete EACH ONE manually. It took me about 20 minutes to finally erase all traces of Panda, so be patient.

After you're done, do a cold reboot (turn OFF PC and on again) and that's it.

Good luck!!

And btw, I suggest you try Avast AV before installing McAfee. I'm running it for years now and installed it in about 20 pcs or more and recommended it to lots more and everybody happy and never a single problem.

Your choice. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

I have AVG the paid edition, I found the free AVG seems to be for curing viruses rather than catching them befoe they get on to the machine. If the resident shiels and e mail scanner is not fuctioning, try uninstalling it and re installing the programme again.EDIT Avast is a better anti virus its free.

Go to your control panel and click on add/remove programs. You should find AVG listed there. Uninstall it from there.

Try running search to find if any of the files for avg remain,if so delete them! You could also try reinstalling avg and remove it again.

You will need to edit the registry. Click start, run, and type regedit. Use find to search for AVG and delete all entries.
