I just want to say that I am utterly appalled by "See the Light"'s acceptance of this passage. It's truly sickening.
The rebellious son here is not said to have raped or molested any children. Just a drunkard and glutton.
Can you only imagine someone advocating this today? Ok, so you've got a son who drinks and overeats. He has lived this way for a long time. So that's it, let's all stone him to death?!
What makes people think that what is appalling today is somehow not appalling when it was done thousands of years ago?

Well the christian god told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as a test and even though Abraham was stopped the deity still had the nerve to ask. And, as you have shown above, there are other instances.
The old testament is violent and barbaric and I think many christians try to forget it is there until they have a use for something contained within it's verses.

The Law of Moses was a strict and harsh one put upon the people because they rejected the higher law. The higher law is a better testament. The Law of Moses was a heavy taskmaster laid on the backs of Israel to keep them in remembrance of their duty to God, and to keep them looking forward to the coming of Christ when the burden will be lifted. "come unto me, ye that are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Follow the link below to learn more about this taskmaster, the Law of Moses, which was instituted because of the hardness of the hearts of the children of Israel and their disobedience.

The stubborn and rebellious son was not an "ordinary" rebellious youth here, but one who had been immoral for a long period of time.
The parents were responsible to the community for their children. The elders bore the responsibility for the actions of the community as whole.
All the men of the community shared in the responsibility for executing the rebellious youth. The community could not allow the rebellious yout to spread his immoral practices.
I do not have a problem with that. If you have, think about rape or child molestation if that helps. They did not have the police. They needed to protect the community. There are always people who think that they are above rules. : )

People are disillusioned because a lot of them have not read the bible. There is a lot more to the bible than John 3:16. They claim to be christian and have NO idea what that means and what they've signed up for.

I'm sure you're already aware of selective reading, plus the old cut and paste method of interpreting the Bible to further an agenda? Yeah. I'm sure this will fall on deaf "ears" my gentle friend.
