God will confound the intelligent with the simple.

So if the intelligent don't want to believe in Hell, than they can rationalize that it doesn't exist. But that doesn't make up for the fact that it is real and exists.

I believe more people are sticking to the more reasonable answer -- that the idea of hell was added in order to scare people into becoming Christian. I mean, seriously, look how well it's worked; it leads people to want to convert to Christianity "just in case". It's a scare tactic, nothing more. And it works.
