Since I've moved to New York I've noticed a lot of Jewish men carrying small pillow type things. What are they? In my old town the amount of Jews was negligible so I've never seen these before.

It's called a Tallit, or Tefillin bag. These are the bags in which Jews carry their Tallis, which is a long white robe-type thing, which they wear on holidays and Saturdays (the Sabbath/Shabbat), and, sometimes, their tefilin, which are the wooden boxes which you may have seen them wear before on their heads and arms.

it depends on the day and time of day -- you might be seeing men carrying a prayer shawl (talit) in a bag (sometimes a cloth bag inside a plastic covering bag. It might also hold the tefillin (phylacteries) on a weekday, and even a prayer book.

of course, maybe you're just in an area where people carry pillows...

If it's like a little zippered thingy like I think you are talking about, then I don't know the name....but it's a little storage bag that holds the copy of the Torah and yarmulke, maybe even the prayer shawl

I could be wrong.....I'm not religious, but I had something like that at my Bar Mitzvah
