They use it to catch a sheep when handling them for there normal health checks etc. It also doubles as a walking stick and weapon if required. The crook is latched around the sheeps neck or horns to pull the sheep to you so you can get hold of it. There slippary things you know. Sheep horn was used to make the crook and hazle for the shaft. The horn is often crafted into shapes such as a rainbow trout jumping. Shephards had time on there hands when living the bothy life up on the hill and they used this time to do carvings and cameo engravings on tabaco tins. Its quite a skill and art.

A sheperds "crook" was a Euphemism for a a dehbilating condition brought about by lonelines and a fondness for the outdoors.

Those suffering the condition often felt it necessary to display their afliction through stylised attire and ornimentation, thus identifying themselves to others in the same position.Babylonian goatherds in around 120 BC started the fashion for stylised staffs, often ornately carved from "sacred woods".Such staffs provided solace as well as support, and the fashion soon spread throughout the civilised world.By 1300 AD it became compulsory for all shephards to carry a "crooke" just as clergy wear a collar or king wears a crown.Post reformation the Catholic church declared the carrying of crookes as heresy and the tradition rapidly declined.

It is used to pull sheep and lambs from out of such things as ditches. He can also separate an animal from the flock with it.The crook fits around the neck enabling the shepherd to pull it up. It is also a walking aid for when in the hills and fells.

The crook was used by shepherds to reach down short cliffs and catch hold of sheep to untangle them in rocks or shrubs. It can be used to snare a leg or the neck very carefully to move a sheep or goat.
