the process can take up to 18 months, what do you do until then, would a structured settlement company be the answer?

Go to your local department of human services.

Talk to them about SSI, food stamps, etc.

They have many programs that you may qualify for while you are waiting on social security.

If you do qualify for SSI and receive payments, when social security kicks in you will probably have to pay the SSI back.
But, if/when social security kicks in, you should receive a lump sum back pay from the date you filed. And the SSI repayment will come out of that.
