Money is the easy way to help others. Real help involves things like house building (Habitat for Humanity) collecting food for food banks, running clothing drives, helping with school and employment advances, giving rides when needed - that kind of thing.

We were no more or less peaceful in the past. Far too many people believe the only way to 'settle' a difference is via violence.

Yes in my humble opinion the past was more peaceful. I remember as a youngster that we would leave our house in the morning with open windows and unlocked doors and didn't come back til almost dark. Nothing was ever touched. Don't try that now! Now days money is everything to people. It has caused my siblings and my children to completely abandon me. Now it is a case of the money having them instead of them having the money. So sad. But I forgive them be cause i know how easy it is to mess up . Been there done that. love swindled

For some, money is the end all to their 'torment', but anyone with soul that is not so blinded by materialism knows that helping others can be as simple as sharing your food (whether inviting them to dinner or go through your pantry), letting them earn food by doing odd chores, or hiring them to do work that you can't do (not work you won't do), taking them to the local food closet and let them get food so they can be more independent, help them get a paying job by taking them to places that are hiring. Babysit for them until they can get their first paycheck or get better arrangements....there are so many ways to help those in need, besides throwing money at them. Help them to arrange for better education by helping them find free or affordable transportation to school, apply for grants and/or work-study programs so they can do better for themselves, and feel good that they did it.
Actually as for the past, some things were better, but other things were worse. I admit that the crime level wasn't as bad before 9/1979 as it is now. Our local beach was a safe place to go for kids alone, now I feel like I have to 'pack heat' if I go down to the beach because of all the really strange people that have moved down by the beach, and I sure wouldn't let a kid under 18 wonder alone around town or down by the beach now after Ivan!!!! But, then again, the past was so full of racial strife and even with the advent of Civil Rights, there was still the threat of "discipline" against white people and people of different races hanging out together.
I personally was raised in the military around people of almost any race you could imagine and never thought of them as being anything more than a potential friend. It wasn't until my dad retired in '71 that I had heard the "N" word at the age of 13 and had no idea what it was or who it was associated with. So there is actually good and bad about the past. Peaceful? I don't think so, there have been wars of some kind or another going on since I can remember as each one of us (my siblings and I) were war bond babies!

I'm not sure I understand the first part of your question.

But I believe no matter how rich a society is there will always be less fortunate people among us. We can endeavor to alleviate suffering but we will not get 100% rid of it.

I think all eras have good things and bad things about them. i was born during a war, the Korean. I grew up through a war, Vietnam. We've had conflict through time for eons. Because of mans weakness of inhumanity to man we are going to still have mortal conflicts going on into our future. It's a sad fact of humanity as long as people have differences of eithics, morals, opinions it's going to happen.

It would be nice to have a utopia where no one went to war, no one starved, no one was hateful and mean to others.

I remember my early years through the gauziness of memory as peaceful and safe. But was the world that way reality. I think because of my security I felt within my home I will have consult history to learn the answer to that.

The past was better because there was so much less greed.
