Performance wise they are comparable. Reliability wise, the Onkyo is tops. And "user-friendly" wise, the Onkyo is tops.

Onkyo makes a fine receiver and it is a good value for the money but it is not superior to Denon. This is not my opinion but simply a fact. Denon's HDMI switching and upscaling for all video sources is second to none. Not to mention having a greater number of overall inputs and superior remotes. The Denon 2807 is simply the best receiver in the $800 range and the Denon 4306 gets the best reviews of any reciever in the next level up.
Of course if you're comparing a base model Denon to a top model Onkyo, the Onkyo will win. But if you compare similar model lines, the Denon always comes out on top. Onkyo makes fine products as does Yamaha & Pioneer but they take 2nd place when compared to Denon. All the major publications like Sound&Vision, Home Theater & The Perfect Vision back up what I'm saying.

Denon gives you better SURROUND SOUND because they use IDENTICAL power supplies for each channel...Your Onkyo beefs up the front two channels and then skimps on the center and rears.
This means, that with the Denon, if all of your speakers are similar, you can leave all of your speaker's volume levels at zero...This also means the Denon won't play as loud as your Onkyo.

I have an Onkyo, believe me, spectacular !! 7.1 home theater and a DV-SP504 HDMI; sound and images are terrific.
Denon is more expensive and I do not like the design at all.
By the way, I have a DVD Onkyo DV-SP504, it is good but is only region1, so I'm limited. I would like to watch region 4 movies. Does anybody know the sequence to unlock it?
Thanks in advance

Denon, since components of the same brand tend to be most compatible when put together.

Do you mean does one sound better than the other or does
one have more features than the other.Or is one more powerful in output than the other.I think either would be fine as long as they can drive your speakers satisfactory. It would take forever to listen to all the surround sound receivers to try to hear a difference.

Splitting hairs in the "mid-fi" arena
They are about the same level of build and sound quality at comparable prices. The only difference would be the features and feel (ergonomics).
They more than likely have many parts made by the same microchip and parts manufactures.
