I believe in the Lord Jesus that He is the true Son of God, born to a Virgin, lived and then was sacrificed supreme for our sins, was in the ground a full three days and three nights and rose again on the third day by the Power of God. He now sits at the Right Hand of God and His blood was shed for our sins and this belief gives me the "Blessed Hope" that upon his return for me I will go to be with Him forever.
Why? Because it is true, His tomb is empty, His death and burial was witnessed, there are no man made laws or doctrines involved, and I confessed to Him daily that I am a sinner and I believe in the Blood.

I've "broken" a couple of religions/philosophies in my time by studying them and thinking about them too hard: I didn't want to believe something that wasn't true, no matter what it promised or how good it looked/felt on the surface.
After fifteen years of being a Christian, I am now an atheist.
As is supported by many of the replies so far, most individuals are heavily influenced by their family history and whatever faith is prominent in their society/region. Geographical maps of religion make this very clear:
(sorry, I've used these URL's before. I find them intriguing)

I am an atheist. It is with sadness that I am forced to come to this. I have been a seeker all my life. I've thought I found "it" a number of times.
Aside from all the stupid people professing this or that belief, I have seen no evidence of an actual deity. The ark of the covenant of the Jews is nowhere to be found, the Holy Grail of the Christians has been missing for centuries, assuming it ever existed at all, Mohammed was supposedly taken into heaven, WITH HIS HORSE, of all the ridiculous things I've heard, this has to be the most.
The president of the Untited states claims to talk to god, if this is true, then god must be an IDIOT.
There are folks in the Philippines who actually flog and then CRUCIFY themselves to somehow get close to god? What kind of lunacy is this??
I've seen a lot of evidence of insanity, stupidity, and self-serving EVIL, but no evidence of an all powerful being.

Religion is an empty word. I am a Christian. I am so because it is the truth. It is not my religion. Religion is a word people use to group us with everyone else and harness our freedoms. I am a Christian in the same way I am American. I just am. It is who I am, not what I practice.
For all the atheists that answered, I thought you guys were not a religion, so how does this question pertain to you?

I wanted a belief system that was based on reality. I wanted a belief system that just looked for people to be good and do the right thing. I wanted a belief system where I didn't have to go to some building once a week to get programmed.
And, I think I found it :)

I started out Christian Science. Then Mom asked me if I wanted to try "our side" of the families religion. So I tried Catholicism. After seeing how forceful and mean it was, and didn't allow me to think for myself, I (age 8 or so) went back to Christian Science. Then after failing to "heal" my homosexuality (a big epiphany--God made me this way), I decided to throw all religion away, only to eventually get back the important chunks through sampling many religions and philosophy.
Now I'm more Gnostic. This allows me to grow Spiritually, picking up gems from all my religions and experiences while discarding the strict rules and dogma.

Islam, because there is no god but God, and Muhammad is his last and final messenger.
He was simply a man, who spoke the truth, and told us about the previous Prophets and that we will stand before God and account for our deeds.
And that those of us, who hastened to do good deeds will have the best of rewards.

Christian. Why? Because “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ (Psalm 14:1)
There is no discrimination in our congregation, be they Austrian, English, Romanian, Turkish, Yugoslavian, Czechzs, Afircan, Filipinos, Japanese, Chinese, Jewish, Spanish, Italian, name it....all languages, nations ang tongues...we call each other brothers and sisters, for we are all Jehovah's witnesses.
Isaiah 43:10Â “YOU are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “even my servant whom I have chosen, in order that YOU may know and have faith in me, and that YOU may understand that I am the same One. Before me there was no God formed, and after me there continued to be none. 11Â I—I am Jehovah, and besides me there is no savior.”
