From what I remember about the Atkins diet, I was on it 30 years ago after I had my son, lost 40 lbs. It was all protein, nothing white, no flour, no sugar, no dairy. You could eat a pound of bacon and six eggs for breakfast. Steak and salad. Low-fat is just that, you can buy low-fat ice cream, low fat mayo, low fat sour cream, all white. So there is a big difference. Also with the Atkins diet, I took mega doses of vitamins, no alcohol either. Buy the book and read it before you do the diet, I think its very extreme.

I suggest you run away from the Atkins Diet as fast as possible. This diet sounds really good on paper but isn't good for you. The whole idea is that the body converts carbs(both pasta and sugars) and fats for energy, the carbs you don't use get stored as fat. Simple soultion right? Eliminate the carbs, increase your protien and use fat for energy. The Atkins diet uses a low carb, high protein philosophy, unfortunatley, most high protien foods, like 80/20 ground beef, is still pretty high in fat, thus very harmful to your heart. With that said, a reduced carb diet coupled with smart decisions with lean meat and exercise is the best choice. Try eating lean fish, or bonless, skinless chicken breast, or a more lean choice of beef. Also, make sure you are eating throughout the day. Instead of 3 big meals, have 5 or 6 smaller meals. As for a lower fat diet, this is a great idea for your hearts sake, but you can't do a lower fat diet with 3 meals of pasta and no exercise and expect results. Balance is the best idea with exercise. You are what you eat! If you eat snickers and big mac's all day you will more than likely be a big mac :)

there aren't really any similarities between the two diets.
Atkins is designed to increase insulin sensitivity by restricting the carbohydrate intake and pretty much force the body to utilize fats as the prime energy source as the body fat is being reduced
low fat diets for those who don't have gal bladder problems are just a very, very bad idea. there is no benefit to consuming a low fat diet as ingesting fats in the diet doesn't make a person fat. fats are beneficial and essential to proper health in so many ways

Atkins is a high-fat, high protein diet. Dieter's count carbohydrates (not calories). There are strict limitations on foods that have a high percentage of carbohydrates, but there are no limitations on zero-carb foods. Exercise is not generally recommended or required. Dieters often say they have little to no hunger on this diet, which makes compliance easier.
Lot-Fat diets are just the opposite. Dieter's count calories and fat grams. There are limitations on the number of fat grams and calories, but no specific limit on the number of carbohydrates (other than the over-all calorie count). Dieter's are encouraged to each foods rich in many nutrients (since they are getting fewer calories), including plenty of fiber and whole grains. Exercise is usually recommended or encouraged with a low-fat diet. Dieter's often complain of being hungry on a low-fat diet, which makes compliance more difficult for some.
