The first thing you need to do is give a PRECISE definition of "CULTS" as you are using it.
Not all cults have/had a religious orientation!
Depending on how you define it, "cults" could include religious movements that caught on. Examples of these would be:
Mormonism (Latter Day Saints),
Shakers,
Quakers,
Mennonites,
Jehovah's Witnesses,
Seventh Day Adventists,
Christian Science,
etc.
The "Religious Movements Project" site at the University of Virginia is a good source for information.

Hello cb,
In China, during the Boxer Rebellion, many chinese were led to believe that if they learned this special martial art with which to repel the foreigners, that they would be immune to the western guns, and be immortal.
Unfortunately, many who believed this died in the resulting rebellion.
Going further back in Chinese history, Kung Ho (died in 343 AD) led a cult of physical immortality called Hsien. More recently 13th century english philosopher Roger Bacon led a cult that believed in immortality by adhering to "Secrets Arts of the Past".
Ancient greek philosopher Galen sought immortality as well in 2nd century AD. Arabic philosopher/physician Avicenna (11th century AD) believed in it.
More modern day believers are Ray Kurzweil and Terry Grossman.

Sounds like JW's
Built around a perversion of the covenant name of God, yet they use a perverted version rather than maintaining the meaning of the word, as would conform to the practice of the ancients. I guess the closest thing to a symbol for them would be the TETRAGRAMMATON, the 4 Hebrew letters which form the name.
They hold to the very common misconception of an EARTHLY reign of Jesus, even though clear language scripture about his return indicates that EVERYTHING will be destroyed:
2Peter 3:8 Dear friends, here is one thing you must not forget. With the Lord a day is like a thousand years. And a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow to keep his promise. He is not slow in the way some people understand it. He is patient with you. He doesn’t want anyone to be destroyed. Instead, he wants all people to turn away from their sins.
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar. Fire will destroy everything in them. God will judge the earth and everything in it.
11 So everything will be destroyed. And what kind of people should you be? You should lead holy and godly lives.
They misinterpret Revelation to teach that ONLY 144,000 people will go to heaven, yet fail to realize that the 144,000 mentioned are JEWS.
The immortality that they look forward to is ON THE EARTH, in opposition to the teachings of scripture.
