He had a choice and he chose the wrong one. We all have choices-to do good or to do wrong.

Judas Iscariot was a traitor but by being a traitor he helped fulfil the bible prophecy of Jesus' betrayal. When something happens God causes it to happen, now people have choices and God especially, for his disciples wanted them to be an example and love him.. Truth is he will never be sure if God truly wanted his own kind to betray him, but it does show and teach us much about our present, past and future society.

It was known long before humanity was created that Jesus was to die, the supreme sacrifice for sins. The end of the Mosaic law and the start of living by His grace. As a child, Jesus was aware of His heritage. At the age of 12 he was teaching in "His Father's house". So too was it known that Peter would deny Him and Judas would betray Him. Through out the Old Testament there are prophesies the point to His suffering and death.

Judas was of course a traitor (somebody who behaves in a disloyal or treacherous manner). He professed to follow Christ as a disciple but never really grasped the concept of their mission. He was most concerned about money (as are many today) and with the “poor” (as many are today); he just had no cognizance of the Spiritual mission Jesus had undertaken. If you recall Jesus attempted to tell him about it, “…For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.” Mark 14:7-8 (KJV) He just wasn’t listening (as are many today).
Jesus knew of the impending betrayal, Judas knew “of it” but did not know “about it.”
Note To the person above whose answered posits that Judas may have been formally directed by Jesus to betray him and uses the gospel of Judas as a reference: ahaaa no. While there may be a document that purports to be the gospel of Judas, canonically it does not exist and has proven to be fraudulent.

I do believe he had to do his part in fulfilling the prophecy, I also believe we have a free agent, it was his choice to be a part of Gods' plan. My doubt comes with the fact that .....
Jesus openly cursed Judas when during Passover Seder (Matthew 26:24; Mark 14:21) he said, "But woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed for it would have been better for him had he never been born".
***************Note********************
............Mark wrote verbatim............
Had the Judas story ended with the betrayal followed by the suicide everything might have been hunky-dory, but the writer of Acts couldn't leave well enough alone. In 1:15-19 he tells us that Judas didn't give the money back; he invested it in real estate. We also learn that Judas didn’t commit suicide; his death was accidental.
******************Note**********************
Verse 18 & 19 of Acts [KJV]
18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
****************************************
My conclusion is this is not something that I need worry about.........It won't get me into heaven it's not part of my salvation .

Jesus Himself said of Judas, “The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born” (Matthew 26:24). John 17:12 also says concerning Judas, “While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.”

He was a traitor to Jesus and God used him as apart of his plan.So both. But he resented his deed...and hung himself after returning the money
He helped fulfill a couple prophesies including
Zechariah 11:12 "betrayed for 30 pieces of silver,
Zechariah 11:13-"The money will be cast to the potter"

Judas had to fulfill a special role for Jesus to be able to seal the covenant. There is strong support for the notion that he not only knew what it was that he was doing but may have been charged with the assignment by Jesus himself. The Gospel of Judas tells the story of how Jesus gave him his marching orders. Judas also had to offer up someone he loved dearly for the sake of the rest of humanity. That was an even harder sacrifice that offering oneself up. To give up someone that you love is impossible next to a self sacrifice, but that's the struggle he had to live with.

According to the Christians' belief, they should be thankful to Judas Iscariot to sacrifice his soul to betray Jesus or else how could they be saved for according to the NT, the price of sin is blood which Jesus has to give. (...being one of the strangest religious belief I ever know!)
But I respect my Christian brothers and sisters. The belief of others is their personal affairs.
Peace.

Judas a traitor? He was the only one doing God's will.
Peter denied 3 times. Others were discussing who were the greatest. Thomas was skeptic. Everyone fled.
Judas declared the Lamb to be innocent in the Sanedhrin.
He did not betray. Jesus called him, "My Friend".
The Devil of the story is Peter, whom Jesus calls just that:
