Nice of you to want to help your friend; you would be more helpful if you got her some help for the cutting, though.

In the mean time, she should soak the infected cut in the warmest water she can stand--with comfrey (tea bags work) or salt or even soap in it. Then she should dry the area, apply an antibiotic ointment (like neosporin or one of the triple antibiotic choices), and keep it loosely covered. REPEAT 3 times per day.

She really needs to make sure the infection improves quickly--to avoid blood poisoning and so on.

She also REALLY needs help with the cutting problem. Can you get her to a counselor or doctor who can help without involving those in her family who seem to not understand her?

She may have to go to a doctor or the infection could spread and get worse (gangrene, anyone?). If it is very deep, she may also need stitches and they would probably want to give her a tetanus booster, too. Don't mess around with infected cuts. Maybe she should also seek help from a mental health professional, too, so that she can get past the issues which make her want to cut in the first place.

Your friend should go to the hospital. She needs help about cutting herself but she has to be willing to get help. For now, she can go to the hospital and she should be safe because of the patient confidentiality act. That means the doctors can't give give out you information even to parent if she says so. I feel you would be a better friend to her if you told someone about her cutting herself but if you choose to be loyal in keeping this secret, you will feel the responsible if it gets even more serious. Good luck to you both

Try honey, it kills bacteria. Or use something like neosporin. Just tell her to keep an eye on it, and go to the doctor anyway

She needs to go to a docter if she's cutting herself, because she may go to more drastic things. Be a friend and help her get the courage to get help.

Your friend needs to be treated for more than just an infection... she needs to see a mental health professional.

Your friend will have to tell her parents about this. The infection may need debriding as well as antibiotic therapy. It certainly needs a higher level of care than she is able to provide.

Please also tell her that using peroxide on a wound is fine for the first day. After that, peroxide kills the developing tissue cells and delays healing. This may have been part of the problem.

Wash it as clean as possible-I know, it hurts- try "Tincture of Iodine". If there are germs present in the cut, it will sting when the iodine is applied, but invision it as the iodine is killing the nasty bugs........You only need to touch the spot with the glass wand with a drop of iodine. That is more than enough. Wait till the stinging dies down and apply another drop. You should be good for a bandaid after that.

Infections are not something to take lightly. She could lose her arm/leg, etc.
Unfortunately, your friend is past the point of home remedies.
Go to the emergency room if you have to, but get medical treatment ASAP.
