I had a knot in my back and he pretty much just rubbed the same area for about 30 minutes. When he was rubbing, it didn't feel like it normally does when I have a knot in my back and he rubs it. It felt like it was on fire and it was pinching. He never rubbed too hard though, it felt pretty good. It is my middle back right underneath my shoulder blade. When I went to bed 3 hours later, I noticed that it was all red and swollen. It is still like that, it hasn't gotten any better. I put a hot pack on it last night and I took a tylenol (I'm 21 weeks pregnant so my options are limited). Is there anything I can do to help? I've been relaxing and my dr won't be back until Tuesday.

I am a massage therapist and I work at Hands on Healing, a school in Tujunga, CA. I've studied a bit of physiology and I can tell you that heat, redness, pain and/or swelling indicate an inflammatory response. I agree with the previous answer that ice is the best course of action at this point. Rubbing someone's back is a sweet gesture and you're very lucky to have someone who is willing to do that...however, pregnant or not, rubbing one spot for half an hour is overkill. Your body is simply trying to communicate that to you. If you've ever wondered why massage therapists tell their clients to drink a lot of water, it is exactly to avoid the symptoms you describe. Things such as lactic acid, natural body waste and pollutants (all commonly refered to as toxins) that has been stored in the tissues can cause soreness and irritation after a massage unless the client drinks enough water to flush it out. Please be sure to drink enough water after anyone massages you in the future. Do the best you can with water and ice until you can see your doc. Best wishes, Karen

you're pregnant? it probably has nothing to do with the back rub or your muscles. have him look at it. does it look anything like a large pimple? that could be what it is. your body is going through a lot of changes right now. it isn't uncommon for women to get some kind of acne during pregnancy. even on your back. wash it with a good cleanser and use some astringent on it. that may help.

Instead of using heat apply an ice pack for fifteen minutes every 30 minutes. Heat can make the problem much worse. Do this until you can see your doctor on Tuesday.

My husband is 6'4 and all legs. Every time we fly somewhere it is miserable for him because his knees get bruised and were even bleeding once. aside from emergency exit rows that we are never able to get seating at what airline out there can help make our traveling more comfortable and safe.
