i have a gas cooker and the oven wont heat up proprely, the ignition lights it but then it stays low even when its turned up. Ide like to fix it myself as iam skint at the moment and cant afford another. Was working perfectly well the other day any. Can anyone help?

you need a new thermostat.
sometime if you pull the knob off, you can adjust it, by loosing the little screw, and changing the setting.

If you are in Britain then it is the flame sensing device. When it heats up with the low flame a liquid expands which allows the gas valve to open on full gas. It is not worth risking yours and anyone elses life to change it yourself. A Corgi registered engineer qualified on gas cookers would be needed in Britain.

It might just need a good cleaning. Try using a good light to see what you're doing and a wire brush.
If that doesn't work, inspect the unit and see if it's rusting out pretty bad or intact. If it's intact, you might try an oven cleaner and let it sit over night, clean with a damp rag, and do the brush again.
If that doesn't work, apart from replacing the burner, you might buy a cheap electric toaster oven for your baking.

If the pressure is OK on the top burners you could try cleaning out the jet nozzles on the oven burner, they might have got clogged. We are all told to call out the professionals these days - but who can afford it!?

are you talking about the outdoor kind people fry stuff with? if it sits around they can get spider webs that need to be cleaned out with a pipe cleaner. if you are talking about a stove, then the burners are usually replaceable as the heat can degrade the metal... but be very careful with gas, if you are not getting a blue flame, you are probably releasing CO (carbon monoxide)

Please dont ever mess around with gas appliances yourself unless you are a qualified corgi engineer in the uk,you will find many listed in the yellow pages
