My acquaintances from the reservation say they prefer "indian" because it shows how stupid the whites were... they thought they were in india....

I am 1/4 Cherokee and I'll tell you the correct one is Native American! When we were kids we would ask our Grandmother who was 100% Cherokee "What are we grandma?" Because she married white as did our Mother. She would reply "Your're an American and that's all you need to know!" When Columbus discovered America he thought He was in India and that is why the native here were called Indians!

As a person of Native descent, both are wrong. We were here before this place got named America. we also were once over 500 sovereign nations and we did not all like each other. That said I prefer American Indian if i must choose and find neither term derogatory.

Ok, I am no one to speak for anyone...though I suggest if you know someone, then first choice call them by their name. Beyond that, I've always been given the idea that people would rather prefer to be called by their tribe/Nation affiliation far more then a generic 'racial' term.
If you don't know either, then maybe skip identifying a person as any such terms.
