I just got an 07 accord, you didnt specify if your looking to buy with some of your 8 grand or just make a down payment. Honda will give you your moneys worth but resale values on honda are excellent, which means it one of the most expensive cars to buy used. Some of the ideas listed above i would agree with......if you have a steady income and good credit i would put a nice down payment on a new car and finance at a LOW interest rate (2.9%- 4.9% on hondas right now) and you should be in good shape

Honda accord, Toyota Corolla. Any years on those are good. If taken care of they run forever.
If you would like something 4WD buy a Jeep.
Go test drive a few different makes and models before you decide. Without knowing you its hard to say what kind of car you would like, what you would fit into comfortably etc.

Toyota Echo might fit your budget - but might be too small.
(Goodness forbid you got into an accident,)
I got a Toyota Corolla (definitely bigger) for $15,000 and I love it!!! Also price around the Honda Civic - these cars are high quality and reliable!! Best of luck in choosing!!:)

You could lease. It'll be cheaper than the loan payments even if you've got great credit.
Or you could go to a certified pre-owned dealer, make sure there's a FULL two year warranty.
