Acid rain is defined as any type of precipitation with a pH that is unusually low. Acid rain (or more accurately acid precipitation) occurs when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are emitted into the atmosphere, undergo chemical transformations and are absorbed by water droplets in clouds. The droplets then fall to earth as rain, snow, or sleet. This can increase the acidity of the soil, and affect the chemical balance of lakes and streams. (for more, see source)

Almost nothing- Bush administration is going with a "voluntary" curb on power plant emissions. Problem is the fixes can cost a lot of money. The Clean Air Act is our best air pollution defense, unfort, it is not being upheld as it was written..... except, the Supreme Court just ruled that CO2 can be regulated by the EPA as an air pollutant- very big step forward.

EPA regulations that set limits for the discharge of sulfur compounds by power plants and automobiles. Have reduced acid rain. Recent regulations on diesel fuel have also reduced the amount of sulfur allowed in that fuel.
This has all come at a cost to consumers. Very few coal fired plants are being built to generate electrical power and the ones in operation use significant portions of the power they generate to operate the scrubbing equipment used to clean up their smoke stacks. The new "low sulfur" diesel cost more than premium gas and is driving up the cost of everything delivered by truck, and that is everything.
Because of regulatory difficulties in building nuclear plants in the US and the EPA cost involved in building coal fired plants, electrical utilities have for the last decade or so been building natural gas turbine powered generation plants. These plants are cheaper to build and the cost of the fuel can be passed on to consumers. Which has driven up the cost of natural gas. Meanwhile France a backward third world country and Japan generate around 70% of their electrical power with nuclear power plants.

the best way to prevent air pollution...especially the one from industries the air or smoke thet comes out of inustries has to be checked and filteres for nitogen and sulpher oxides...thus acid rains can be prevented
