First was a backyard breeder. I ended up wanting to compete with my Sheltie and had to jump through hoops as I never got papers. So had to ILP her. I learned more and would not do that again.
Never would buy from a Petstore, no puppy mills !
I rescued my second dog from a bad backyard breeder. He became my first show dog. He had a good pedigree, but his early years were rough. He was a mess(filthy and SHY), but I put a lot of time into him. He became a good dog. He came with a house I rented (long story).
Now I buy from good reputable breeders, I know the sire and dam (both are usually Champions with other titles as well). I show my dogs and compete with them. I showed my last dog to his Championship myself. My current Whippets are half sisters and are going to a Whippet Specialty this weekend. I will show them myself. We did race practice yesterday.
If I was not going to buy a competition dog, I would rescue a dog from my local breed rescue or from petfinder.
My current dogs will compete in Conformation, Obedience, Rally, Lure Coursing and Racing, and possibly Agility. My younger female's grand dam has about 15? titles.
The sire of both is an amazing dog (a Dutch import, US Champion) and I'm proud to have his pups. I recommend our rescue highly to people looking for a pet.
My dogs are beautiful girls and well behaved (for pups) and go all over with me. All of my dogs have been good ambassadors for their breeds. BUT I always tell people that my dogs were not born well trained, I put a lot of work into my dogs.
My show dogs are pets first, so they have to have nice temperaments. We went camping last weekend :)

Never would I get a dog from a pet shop or broker. Backyard breeder only because the breeder lied about information we later found out to be untrue. Kind of hard to disprove a lie after they send a picture weeks after we got her. but otherwise a reputable responsible breeder.
And your right the time it takes to find a reputable breeder and a price that is doable are very hard, but if they are good they will work with you on the price and maybe even do payment plans. I know we do.

Several years ago my roommate at the time purchased a puppy from a petstore. At the time, we didn't even know about puppy mills or any of that stuff.
Since we've learned, though, he has rescued another dog and volunteers for a rescue organizion and fosters dogs. I adopted two dogs.
I think you are right. I think it is always worth it to buy from a champion breeder, especially if you want the dog for a particular purpose or job.
If, however, you either cannot afford a well bred pet, please adopt. There are millions of dogs euthanized every year. And while it's true that sometimes these dogs take a little TLC, it's well worth it!
Thank you for not buying form a BYB or a Pet Store!

I purchased from a pet store. Beforehand I asked for references and was even allowed to question the breeder. I was seeking a poodle and the breeder was a show breeder and explained that every pup in a litter, in fact most pups in a litter are not of show quality. So she deals only with this pet store and over a 12 year period there have been no complaints. I even questioned the local dog warden... he spoke highly of the pet store. By the way, my poodle lived for 10 years and was never sick a day in his life. He was admired by everyone who met him and rightly so.

I support any pet store that does not sell puppies since puppies are the most overpopulated animal on the planet. Even if "certain cultures" do eat them, it is still very overpopulated. You can make more money ff of a cute little puppy than you can on any other animal. So if they sell gerbils, iguanas, fish, and birds I don't mind. But selling puppies is a true poorly thought out money making scheme.

I have tried all three.
First was a petshop, I don't think I'll do that again.
Second was a breeder, she is a friend, I would probably do this again if I couldn't rescue a pup.
Third was a rescue from PETFINDER, I would definitely do this again, especially a puppy, like we have now.

My Maltese, Michi was a gift from my Grandmother (a Maltese breeder). He is so wonderful with a calm temperament. He is great and well-behaved. His only problem is jealousy (which we're working on). I think my next dog will be a rescue, though. ^_^
