Ceramics that weren't totally dried of all water, get real hot. It is usually the cheaper stuff.

The wicked hot ones are not made for the microwave...
It is hard to believe that in 2007 there really are items that can't go into the microwave but there are some remnants of the past still out there.
Make a mental note not to use the ones that get so hot in the microwave again...

"Plates" can be made from various things, and even plates (or other things) that are made from a particular material may have other additives, or different proportions, etc., which may absorb heat in different amounts or larger amounts more quickly than others).

It depends on what they're made of. Paper and glass should stay cool (not including the contents of what you put on it or in it). Some stoneware shouldn't be used in the microwave because the metallic content will absorb the microwaves and get hot.

if it's not meant to be used in a microwave, it will get very hot, while if it is microwave friendly, it will stay cool.
