The nose color method is generally reliable for budgies but not always. I had a male with a nice blue nose, and then suddenly it turned brown and has been brown ever since. If you looked at him now, you'd think he was a female. (While it is possible for birds to change sex, it's never been documented in budgies as far as I know, so I'm going to assume that's not what happened.)

Female..the area over the beak is called the cere..when they are very young it could be tan blue and lavender all at once and same with the males.
Male cere will turn blue when they get older and the female will be tan or a lavender colored.

there r several types of parakeets, r u talking a budgie? if so males have a blue cere, just above the beak, females are brown. other parakeets are ringnecks, rosellas, grass parakeets, cockatiels, superb parakeets, regent parakeets, princess parakeet, red capped parakeets, quaker parakeets, and more.

Baw is correct. This the easiest way when they older. Also, you can tell from the strips on their head, but, it not as good as the Beak Bump. And the strips not show as soon as the beak color.
