I understand that if you have a wind generator it will automatically shut down in case of a power failure to prevent electrical shock to the power company repairmen.Does this mean if there is a huricane and the power was off for weeks you would not be able to use the generator to power your house during this time?

It is true, as it is with photoelectric solar systems.

Operating either system without power on the grid is not as simple as it might seem. Typically a wind-powered generator or a PV system is not designed to deliver the maximum load an occupancy might use. Therefore, it is necessary to shed load when the grid goes down. Conversely, at any given time the occupancy might be using less electricity than the generating system delivers. In such cases batteries are usually used, and arrangements made to reduce the generated output, or cycle it when the batteries need help.

You are correct that backfeeding the utility system can be dangerous for the line workers. Depending on the size of your wind generator, you could install it with a transfer switch after the electric meter.

This way when there is a power outage, you can disconnect your house from "the grid" and run solely on the wind generator. This is the same thing people do with a gasoline powered back-up generator.

i think you can not use wind generators for ever
because some times the air is clean and you can not use the
wind;s energy
you must implant a key and fuse is your wires system
if never blast wind you can switch to other power
this way is very safe and good for your electrical devices

you can saved energy with battery recharge able
and other ways you should have photo battery or gasoline generator.
you must implant is your net wire system.

As Thomas C above stated, you just disconnect and isolate your houses system from the main system, The way this is done is to use what is called a "transfer switch". You throw the "transfer switch" isolating your house, then bring your generator on-line.
