I have a dachshund and I noticed this morning his face is swollen. It is really swollen around his nose and by the sides of his mouth. I'm not sure if he's having a reaction to the pet food he's been eating. It's Ol'Roy and I noticed it was on the recall list. He doesn't really have the symptoms of what is described for the bad food so I think it's something else. I just do not know what it could be or what to do? Can someone please help me?

Ol'Roy dog biscuits & treats are on the recall, not the kibble YET. Check your bag to see if it contains wheat gluten, I doubt it. How long has he been on the food? If he's been tolerating it all his life or even for the past 6 months, I don't think it's the Ol'Roy. Not that Ol'Roy is the best, but that's for a different post! :)
If you did just start him on the food recently, you might just want to switch him to some home-cooked chicken (or hamburger) and rice for a few days until you can get him onto something like Wellness, just in case he's allergic to Ol'Roy.
Are his stools normal? Is he eating?
Does his mouth seem sore? Could it be an abcessed tooth? While this requires vet attention you could give him a baby aspirin or 1/4 adult aspirin (put it in a bit of cheese or hot dog) to ease the discomfort until tomorrow.
Is it possible he banged his muzzle on his kennel/crate or injured it playing with another dog?
If not any of these, it sounds like an allergic reaction, possibly to dyes in the food or even a snake or insect bite. You might try giving him 1/2 a benadryl tablet, it relieves allergic reactions and if that is not the problem, well, it will just make him a little drowsy... ;) As a side note benadryl is also useful for dogs who tend to get car sick. And 1/2 tab is the appropriate dose for a 15# dachshund (I have three of the little weiner critters)
Cold packs might help with the swelling if you can get him to sit still for it.
Keep a close eye on him to be sure that the swelling does not increase to the point he has difficulty breathing; in that case call your vet's emergency #
I'd give him the benadryl anyway ASAP, and possibly put some neosporin on it. Won't hurt and might help.

For one thing, Ol'Roy is probably one of the most terrible foods on the market for dogs. I'm not saying that just based on the ingredients, but by the number of cases I receive about dogs having problems on this food.

Face swelling isn't usually included in the symptoms of using the recalled food, so I wouldn't say it's from that, however, I also wouldn't rule out the rood all together. The problem with cheap foods like Ol'roy is that there aren't any standards for composition, and every bag can have different ingredients, so feeding your dog Ol'Roy constantly is almost like changing the dog to a new food each bag you buy. It does sound like he's having an allergic reaction to something, but from what can only be determined by your vet. I would wait until tomorrow, and if the swelling has not gone down, or if your dogs' state decreases, take him to the vet. It could be anything from the food, to a bug bite/sting, or allergies to something outside. There are literally thousands of things that dogs can be allergic to. Good luck.

First of all, change his diet, even if it's not from the food - why take a chance????
Secondly, not knowing where you live and if it's warm there, could he have been stung by a bee??? Try to find the point of swelling. He may be having an allergic reaction to a sting, or bug bite. Try giving him a Benadryl tablet. ( Put it in a piece of cheese, so you are sure he'll ingest it.)
Benadryl dosage - 25 mg for small dogs every 8 hours
- 50 mg for med-large dogs every 8 hours
As soon as you can, take him to a vet. Try the benadryl. Do not substitute any other kind of allergy tablet or remedy. Only Benadryl or the generic equivalent. It may make your doggie a little sleepy, but it really works.

My poor dog's throat started swelling up one time! She was making noises indicating that it was tough to breathe. Eventually, after taking her to the pet hospital, we found out she had an inflamated soft palate. My dog likes to eat bugs, (gross but true) and sometimes tries to eat bees and wasps. My mom and I figured that a bee's stinger must have stung her throat and she was allergic to it. Maybe YOUR dog is allergic to bee stings and it got stung or something like that. Then again, maybe your pet is allergic to the Ol'Roy food. And of course, it could always be that the food is tainted. It could be many things, but I know how to figure it out. Take your pet to a pet hospital or to the vet's office. Bring a small sample of your dogs food. Describe ANYTHING that you noticed that seemed even the SLIGHTEST bit out of the ordinary. Tell them what food your dog takes and what symptoms it is supposed to provide since it has been tainted. Tell them you have a little bit of the food with you and that you're wondering if there is a way they could test it or at least refer you to someone that can. They will most likely give a diagnosis and/or a cause, OR they will refer you to someone that can. I'm not a TOTAL genius, but I do know a LOT about dogs! I hope this helps you!

Take you dog to a vet. Could be a reaction to an insect. Not sure where you live, so dont know if there are insects out yet or not. We had a dog that had gotten stung by a bee once and it did that. He also could have been bit by a spider. Contact a vet and get him in and make sure it is not a life threatening reaction. Better to be safe than sorry. My dog that was stung had to be given benedryl.

Question... Did the dog have any vaccines yesterday? IF yes see your vet or and emergency clinic.

If not Sounds like your dog was bit by a spider or some other type of insect. I recommend again you see a vet, think of the reaction similar too when you get bit by a bee or spider. We can swell up and in rare cases have breathing difficulties. If it gets worse you need to see the vet.

you say his whle face is swollen - so its probably not a bee.

its probably an allergic reaction to something he has eaten or come into contact with..

keep a close eye on him.. if the swelling gets worse or doesnt start to go down today, then take him to a VET immediately - allergic reactions, particularly around the mouth/throat area can be fatal because the area swells and they cant breathe.

The recalled food caused kidney failure, so I very much doubt it's this.

The dog needs to see a vet ASAP - could be a reaction to an insect bite, but without examining the dog it's impossible to say. He could also have dental problems - yes, this can cause swelling all over the face and throat.

If his neck starts to swells or feels like a water sack, get to a vet immediately.

It could possibly be an absessed tooth or maybe something more serious.

Don't know where you are located, but if you are in a warmer climate, snakes are beginning to move (I'm in FL). A few years ago, one of our females got bit by a pygmy rattler. First her face swelled then her throat!

take him to the vet... it can't be the food because you've used it before without any allergic reaction.

Oh, and Ol'Roy dog food isn't crap to my dog... she is really healthy and she eats it all the time...
