I live a block from Yeshiva University. The area is OK. There is a high rate of drugs in this particular part of the city. Also with the summer coming the amount of street parties will be growing. Oh and during the 4th of July YES, those are gunshots. The area is supposed to be up and coming, but that really is a facade. Its the same as it ever was, the area is OK, better than Harlem, but not like SOHO or the Village.

The better part of Washington hgts is west of bdwy. It is relatively safe for a young woman. Once you get settled in an area you get to know the locals and if you treat them right (when they whistle at you don't get all huffy just give a little smile and keep going) they will watch your back. You might be better off in a room mate situation. Jersey is another option with a decent commute to the city some towns you might want to look into are Hoboken (sat nite is like college spring break along washington st and expensive) Parts of Jersey City are ok with a room mate Newport City might be affordable. FT Lee is next to the GW but might be too boring for you. Good Luck

i moved up to "da heights" as the locals call it, or "WaHi" as the noobs call it, about a year ago. I live at the bottom of the hill from 181st, near the 190th st. A-Train stop.
First off, this neighborhood is definately on the upswing as far saftety and quality of life is concerned. i was there back in the early 90's with my father and i remember it being a warzone.
Few things you need to know: First off, its the highest concentration of dominicans in america, so be expected to learn basic spanish if you want to survive the local businesses.
Secondly, 181 street is the trendy spot, and the safest as well, however, crime can happen anywhere, so my advice to you is always be aware of your surroundings. I lived in harlem before moving to my current spot, and i notice a lot of hostiliy in the heights than farther south. What you need to do is make face time with local business so that they know you are not a tourist. It works, but will take time.
Drugs are a problem, however, there is a rule that anything west of broadway is generally safer than east of broadway.
Trust me, its a good place to live and will be worth alot more as time goes on. The area you are looking at is one of the safest and nicest for the neighborhood. Your girl will be safe at that hour as long as she doesnt make herself a target by flashing expensive items and not being aware.
Dont waste your money on a closet sized apartment downtown when you get something double the size for half the price here. Also, the A-Train is express, takes me 30 minutes everday to get from 190th street to chambers street in the financial district. Also got the 1 train too which is good for getting to upper west side for shopping.
check out our neighbor to the north, Inwood, it is coming up as well, and if you want to stick more with white people than hispanic, inwood is your choice, but i notice very little hostily from local domincans once you show them you are a neighbor, not a tourist

It's a beautiful neighborhood on the bluff, yet you have to be careful. As an outsider, you will be noticed right away. And you will not be welcomed. And you will be harassed if not worse. Best to look somewhere else. It's a very closed knitted hispanic neighborhood, with many on fixed income who fear rents will skyrocket if professionals move in.
