Flares were trousers or Jeans where the bottom half were massive and used to flap about. Just watch a 70s film youll see what I mean. Wasnt just hippies that wore them.

Jeans that are flared at the bottom same as some of them do now. Bell bottom jeans were popular in the 70s. NOt quite (50 years later)

I means jeans that were flared from the knee down...like bell bottoms only more flared.

Flares were a pair of slacks, usually dress slacks, that "flared" out at the bottom forming a "bell bottom" look from the front crease to the back crease. At least that's what I remember.

I would guess that it is a reference to wearing bell bottom pants. They "flare out" at the bottom of the pants leg.
