I got a virus or something in my old Gateway computer, so I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled my software (Win 98). When it asked for the id number, the number on my disk was about 5 numbers short. So I am without my desktop which is my main work computer. I have placed a lot of my important stuff on this laptop, but the memory has been eaten up with the overload. I really need my desktop back! Can anyone understand why the installation wants more numbers than is on Microsoft's official sticker?

1. I wish you had asked about this BEFORE you reformatted your drive.

2. If you did reformat your drive, what you had there is lost now. Only way to get it back is software that recovers after a reformat.

3. YOur delimma highlights a common situation showing up here in Y!A much too often. Everyone neglects their computers until a preventable problem strikes, then they panic and THINK the easy way out is to reformat and load the OS again.... NOT SO !!!!

Good Luck

Do you have your original installation disc from Gateway? It might have something to do with a serial number from them, instead of Microsoft. I would call Gateway first... or visit their site and if that doesn't help, Microsoft next. Don't let either of them talk you into paying money to get support at this point! Good luck!
