Unfortunately religion is not simply about rationality.
It serves the need for humans to connect with each other and form communities. It also abuses this need. To effectively counter religion another form of community must be offered. The individualistic state like the USA does nothing in this regard. It only serves to drive people into religion by being divisive and fostering widespread fear of fellow citizens.
The religious then begin to attempt to overthrow the sate.
It is important to keep in mind the reactionary and subversive nature of fundamentalist religion in regards to the state. Especially when the state is a state of fear.

Technically, you have not stated this in the form of a question, but I suppose the second line makes it officially a question.
Religion is not killed by education, but it is being removed from the schoolhouse. And any religion that cannot accept the reason and logic of modern science and adapt to its body of knowledge is indeed in danger of losing most of its adherents.
But have you seen the movie "What the Bleep Do We Know?" or the book "The Dancing Wu Li Masters"? The fact is, quantum mechanics and much of modern science (including biological and psychological sciences) are converging on the principles of many religions. Matter and energy are more points of view than they are different states. A comedian once said "matter is just sticky energy," and he was basically correct.
Religion and spirituality are different points of view, different vocabularies and symbols from science, but they examine many of the same phenomena, and really do not need to flatly disagree. The battle between Darwinism and Creationism is an isolated war based on a rigid and irrational interpretation of Genesis, and not representative of Christianity more generally, let alone religion as a whole.
You refer to yourself as an ex-Muslim. What was it about your religion that failed to stand up to what you learned of science? Was it perhaps more interpretation than a tenant which is necessary to being a Muslim?

Religions cannot face face facts and live. The religious are not dumb just desperate. Many need the certainty that the religion gives them. It is painful to step into the unknown. Scepticism has its costs. And it is only from scepticism that truth grows.

The UK experience is that when religion comes under threat the response is for the dwindling number of believers to become increasingly radical and conservative in their beliefs but in spite of that Christianity still diminishes. I think that is what we are seeing in the US currently- increasingly conservative beliefs as part of the process of decline of Christianity.

Yes, you are right. Education is the nail in the coffin of religion. Have you noticed that religious groups only go to poor [=uneducated] countries to convert people to their religion.

The most religious societies on Earth are the poorest, and also have the least education. Most Americans just claim to be religious for their own economic and social gain.
