What dont you kids understand about this. Had the british fired upon the Iranians, it would have blown up into a HUGE international incident. By not escalating the situation, they avoided deaths. Maybe since you are safe in your homes not having to face the reality of war and death, you could never understand this. On a patrol like that, there would be an NCO in charge on the boat, the issue is not who's water they were in, but the fact that the whole world is ridiculing them for making the right decision. Any response with weapons to the Iraninan would have done nothing but get those Royal marines and Sailors killed, for no reason at all. Instead, the NCO gave the order to stand down, and what happened? now they are back home, and every one of them is alive. Once you have had a friend of your die right beside you from enemy fire, you can have some input on situation that involve making decision that will get men killed, but until that day, grow up kiddo, you got no idea what your talking about.

What a pity that so many of you immediately jump on the Bash the Royal British Navy bandwagon because of a single incident.
Absolutely it was a low point and yes perhaps even a shameful point in their recent history. Would US Navy officers and crew have refused to surrender even to the death in defending themselves? The US news reports and the US Navy say yes they would have and I agree they would have with a 99.9% certainty.
But in case you have forgotten...or never learned...the USS Pueblo was capture by the North Korean Navy in 1968. The 82 surviving members of the crew were held for 11 months. One crew member was killed by NK shelling during the attack. The ship's captain surrendered the ship without a fight which was criticized by the Navy. A tragic and shameful event in US Naval history but the US Navy was still a great navy at the time regardless. And I don't recall the British castigating our Navy at the time or making jokes about what happened.
So in my opinion to make fun or chastise the entire British Navy for a single incident is improper. The British are and have been our best ally for over 100 years and it reflects poorly on our friendship to make them the butt of cruel jokes and comments.
NOTE to TOM T: Was the Royal Navy ever great or brave? What...you listen to US history class in high school and that is the extent of your military and historical knowledge of Naval seapower over the course of history? Pathetic. The British navy had 1000's ships between 1890 and 1945...every year. The US had difficulty keeping a few hundred aflot suring the same period. Our fleet was devestated by a single attack on Dec 7th.......while no single attack on a British facility did that kind did that type of damage.
Oh and Mr. Revolutionary War Naval expert. I noticed you failed to mention that the British Royal Navy was so great and large that they sent more than enough ships to the American colonies and blockaded the ENTIRE eastern seaboard. Or did you on attend one class on the Revolutionary War. I love people who cite a single, 1 moment in history event and imply that it is a universal continous historical fact. How sad.

Were the Royal Navy ever really that great or brave?
Our American revolutionary hero and father of the US Navy, John Paul Jones, certainly did not think much of them. Armed only with a few old merchant ships re-fitted for war and manned with a ragtag band of merchant seamen, Jones carried our revolution to the Royal Navy, not only in American waters but to the shores of Britain itself, sowing fear to the heart of the empire.
In one battle, as British guns were tearing through the American meager ships, the Royal Navy commodore leading the charge sent a message to Jones (via semaphores): "Have you had enough?" to which Jones replied:"I have yet begun to fight!"

Good question. As I have noted before, the British often complain about the professionalism of our troops.
I cannot condemn those sailors for their survival tactics, but I will never listen to a Brit condemn the quality of American troops again.

So what would you do if surrounded by machine-guns and rocket launchers? Fire? Then you'd end up dead. The sailors didn't and now they're alive.
Seems pretty sensible to me.
