My dog is alergic to fleas and it effects him so much that he has lost his hair and he skin gets red raw. The best way to stop this allergie is to prevent it. But first see your vet to rule out any other complications, and also to get anti inflams if its really bad. Wash your dog once a week or more with a flea wash. I use one that says its safe for dogs with exzema, dermatitis caused from fleas. One with oatmeal is a good one to get as this helps releave the inflamation. Once you have done that, treat other pets you may have, also the bedding and anywhere else. Flea Bomb your house, if its an inside dog. Then go and purchase frontline, I think you can only get this from the vets. I think that is the best, my Dad swears by it. Use it religiously, every 3 months as directions suggest. Again prevention is the best cure for your dog. Good luck and I hope your dog gets better real soon.

Fairly common problem. Make sure you use Frontline or Advantix to prevent bites and infestation. You apply it directly to the dog's neck once per month. You must get this from a vet or order it online.

Treat your yards with sprays as well, just to make sure there aren't any close to you.

They make shampoos with orange extract and d-Limonene specifically to combat flea dermitities (irritated skin due to flea allergies). You can find them in most pet stores or online. Regular baths every week or two can greatly reduce irritated skin caused by fleas. DO NOT USE FLEA SHAMPOO!!! It's too strong to use regularly, it does NOT prevent fleas, it only kills fleas that are on the dog at the time, and it should NEVER be used along with Frontline or other topical treatments.

Also, try to keep your dog inside during heavy flea seasons.

Good luck!

This happened with one of our dogs too and is very common. They get even one flea bite and it starts a chain reaction of biting, itching and hot spots on the dog that can get infected.
What to do? Start with a bath in flea shampoo and then use a once a month product like Frontline or Advantage to keep the fleas off your dog. You and your pooch will be much happier.

To kill the fleas in your home if you have any, use a product called Enforcer. You can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot. It's not very expensive (one gallon was about $8) and it kills adult fleas as well as their eggs. I found that the bombs, even ones that say they are specifically for fleas, don't kill the eggs. One flea can lay thousands of eggs. Make sure when you spray it inside you remove any pets, let it dry well before returning them to the house. That in combination with the other suggestions from everyone will help a million percent.

Yep it's common. You just need to treat and prevent the fleas with either Frontline, Stronghold/Revolution or Advantage. You'll need to spray and vaccuum the house/furniture/pets beds a couple of times too.

Frontline and Stronghold are great for clearing up the affects of flea allergic dermatitis because they do keep all fleas away.

Please don't waste your money on anything from a petshop/supermarket, especially collars, they are extremely ineffective.

Flea bite sylvia cause allergies in many dogs. Currently the product is called Advantix. It is expensive but will clear the dog in about a week. Your vet may also prescribe an antibiotic for 10 days or so to speed the healing. There are no inexpensive shortcuts here... you and your dog will be much happier to follow this advise.

There is a great product for sale called frontline. It is a little expensive but works fantastic. My senior dog has the same problem, and with frontline I keep him protected all year round so he is now allergy free! Frontline are capsules of liquid to put in the skin of the dog's neck and one capsule lasts for 3 months. This can be bought from any veteranary surgery. There are alternative products available from petshops which are much cheaper, but I have found they are not as good. Also, if your dog has had flees, you will have to treat your house, carpets, his basket, couches, etc, as the creepy crawlies can survive in there for a while and re-infect your dog.
Hope this has helped.
Take care.

Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) easily treated but can't be cured. Ensure you use a good prescription quality flea product like frontline or advantage etc. to ensure that he doesn't get anymore fleas. Use it all year round to be on the safe side.

This happens alot more than you would think. Products like Frontline are a great help. You should also make a trip to your local health food store and look for a powder called brewers yeast, especially one with garlic. Mixed with your pets food, this will help the symptoms, the itching, biting, hair loss, etc. The garlic helps to ward off the fleas as well (not to mention vampires!)
