You don't touch the plug with water, just the bulb, say, about half of it- will it break the bulb, or can it take it?

If it was the round bit you put in and switched on, and kept just at the surface, it would be ok. Just keep the electrics out the water (All the round bit does is be a ball of glass keeping the filament in vaccuum).

If you got the electrics in water, water conducts electrictiy, so could cause a fire hazard.

An ordinary house light bulb should be fine - the glass is under pressure from the inside out when it is used everyday from the gas inside it heating up and the glass has to be able to withstand that - in water that will just reduce part of the strain - pressure from the outside going in, and as long as none of the electrics touch the water - it should not be a problem. Just don't leave it in for too long - a temperature differential between the top of the glass and the bottom might cause a crack - but not too sure about that.

It would light and be perfectly ok until the glass that was out of the water got hotter and expanded more than the immersed section, which may cause the envelope to crack, but the chances are that the water would heat next to the glass and nothing would happen. However if you splashed a HOT bulb with water, it would shatter instantly

If the bulb is cold and you place it in the water the light will come on and heat the water. That is all, no short. If you put a hot bulb in the water it will probably crack and short out.
But be very careful around water, if you want to try this at home make sure you use a GFI receptacle or GFI extension cord.

The part of the glass in the water would stay cool, the bit out the water would heat up, the bulb would crack and then implode.

If it was off and clod when you put it into the water, then it would be fine when you turned it on. However as the bulb got hot, it would probably break and water would hit the element, and probably bow your fuses. dont touch the water!!!!

i have dropped rough service bulbs in water they stayed lit for a little bit and then shattered

dont know but fill a glass with water and put the bulb inside it but make sure it doesnt sink
put it in th emicrowave for 10secs

It will break the bulb and you will have a fair chance of dying!

Don't mess with electricity unless you know what you are doing,

the bulb should be alright. it'll heat the water bath tho
