The early Christians interpreted Jesus' death metaphorically, believing it represented a sacrifice to God for the forgiveness of humanity's sins. Jesus himself encouraged this view - it's why he instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice (i.e. the Lord's Supper / Holy Communion / Mass).

A combination of factors. Blood loss, dehydtration, plus in a weakend state, hanging in the position he was in, he probably had difficulty with breathing. There is question about whether when he was speared if he was already dead.
