In 1946, Congress passed a law that gave hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities grants and loans for construction and modernization. In return, they agreed to provide a reasonable volume of services to persons unable to pay and to make their services available to all persons residing in the facility’s area. The program stopped providing funds in 1997, but about 300 health care facilities nationwide are still obligated to provide free or reduced-cost care.

An affordable alternative to insurance is a medical discount plan. Basically, you pay a low monthly fee and then receive extremely discounted ("cash") rates when you visit the doctor, dentist, chiropractor, psychiatrist, etc.

I work for a company that offers these plans, starting at $11.95 per individual per month, and not more than $59.95 per household per month. This is a great alternative, especially for people who have pre-existing conditions, don't visit the doctor much but pay outrageous montly premiums, or have some conditions (i.e. mental illness) that isn't covered by their current insurance.

You can e-mail me if you would like (Charlotte at c.krizman@sbcglobal.net). I can answer more questions for you or even get you signed up. There is also a 30 day money back guarantee if you decide the plan isn't right for you. Visit the link below for more information.

Best of luck!

There are insurance companies that have short term policies that are ideal for people who are temp unemployed or fresh out of college/school and no longer can get coverage from a parent.

One such company is called
Golden Rule. Check out their web site for more info. And check some others out for this type of product. They are limited in what they cover, so ask all the right questions to be sure they meet your needs.

You do not give much info here, but, you can go to the ER if you need medical care, and cannot be refused treatment based on whether or not you are able to pay for it.
