I have a 3 month old Springer Spaniel. She has hurt her paw/leg this morning. She keeps scraping her leg on the ground and chewing her paw. I can't see anything in her paw. Do you think it will get better itself? Is there anything I could do to make it better?

Hi Ali R, if your pup has a cut, wash the leg with an antiseptic solution and apply a layer of antiseptic cream. Check the leg again the next day to see if it's getting better. If it looks infected, you should bring your pup Springer Spaniel to the vet. A good trick is to apply the antiseptic cream right before your pup has his meal. This way, you can allow a little time for the antiseptic cream to settle in. Otherwise, you can play with your pup to keep him occupied and restrain him if he starts licking his paws.

It would help a lot if you knew what caused it to be sore. Do check the nails. If you think it's a pulled muscle and it JUST HAPPENED...you can give 1/2 of a BUFFERED aspirin if the pup is over the age of 6 MONTHS and weighs at least 30 pounds. If smaller use 1 baby aspirin or 1/2 a baby aspirin if under 15 pounds. If the pup is over a year and over 60 pounds you can give 1 buffered aspirin...dose every 6 hours.

Next, fix an ice pack and hold on the leg for 15 minutes on, 25 min off, for about 2 to 3 times at least twice a day. Massage the dog while doing this on the head or back to help keep it calm. If this dog has short or very fine hair, place a paper towel or a thinner than cloth towel between the ice pack and the leg.

If this has been going on for over 3 days and you've seen NO improvement...better pull out the plastic and let your Vet check it out. Be aware....it may not be the leg that's in pain, it may be the shoulder above the leg or the foot; or the hip if in the hind end.

If your pup pulls a lot on lead, and you're using a choke, it is not uncommon to accidentally bruise the muscles in the neck and shoulder, which can cause limping, because there is pain. If this is the case, try switching to a flat collar, gentle leader or a halti.

Receiving a puppy in this condition is questionable. I would inform the breeder of your situation. As I also would request your vet to do a culture on the affected area, so a definite answer can be found. This way they can grow the culture and find out exactly what antibiotics would alleviate the situation. As a former breeder, it is unacceptable for a puppy to have fleas. This leads to tape worms, and their immune system (which is just beginning) becomes deprived leaving them at the mercy of any type of ailment. The Best of Luck!

Wash the area with soap & see if you can see anything wrong (I found a sticker in my dogs paw once). If she continues with this behavior, contact a vet to see her. One of my dogs pulled his muscle in his leg and wouldn't walk on it. He would drag it behind him. The vet gave him some meds and within a few days he was fine.

your puppy could be allergic to something that she has stepped on and its making her itchy make sure you look in between her pads and toes for any thing like a grass seed also check her nails she may have something stuck in the nail bed. wash her leg and paw thoroughly not with soap just water and just watch how she goes if it is getting worse or she is in pain take her into the vet.

Sounds like she does have something in her paw - you probably won't be able to see it, if it's a grass seed or something it will have gone in deep.

Take her to the vet please - foreign objects in a paw can cause nasty infection.

For the record, if you're even worried about an animal - that's what vets are there for!

my dog was also very young when she had a sore paw so we took her to the vets and they said it should heal up soon enough but don't put too much pressure on it.
