You need to do your own homework but:

White LEDs use more electricity than Compact Fluorescents although they don't contain any Mercury.

That's the trade off (Incandescents are crap).

If no mercury is used I would have to go for either LED or compact.

The main problem is that compact is a mature technology and LED based is not as mature. Once both technologies are equality mature, then it is easier to see the environmental impact of each one.

Right now compact fluorescent are the best. LEDs have promise, but the technology needs further development. They need to put out more natural light and be cheaper.

Incandescents are the worst. They even cause more mercury pollution, because of mercury released when excessive amounts of fossil fuels are burned to light them.

My guess would be LED's, but it's hard to get them to be very bright, so fluoro's come out ahead.
